When They Told Me I’ll Get There
Written by: Havoc
he told me the ocean screamed my name
and she held me close, telling me it was mine to keep
she told me the winds would play with me
and he said it was okay if I lived in the trees
he told me a story long ago,
and she tucked me in with a lullaby,
he told me the world would stop by for coffee
in the morning, she woke me up with a smile
funny when they told me it was all a dream
created from sweating nights,
my temperature high and my body aching,
“mumbling nonsense,” they sneered
they called me unhinged when I told them
I was friends with the flames of the forest
whose dewdrops tasted as sweet as sugarcane
when the mist kissed the ground
they treated me well with their prickly thorns
to wake me up from this rabbit hole,
to which I replied to dig deeper,
white roses turning red
they told me,
oh, they told me all kinds of things,
all matter of wantings and all kinds
of somethings
but he told me to brave the indifferent storm,
and she urged me to laugh when lightning struck,
and when they told me to put light in my life,
I colored in all the shades
if this is what’s real
then I am born with an extra dimension,
which no length, width, or height could keep me;
If no canvas can hold me, I paint my own
I greet the sun who warmed my face
and scream my name to the ocean,
I played with the winds that tousled my hair
And had the world pull up a chair in front of me
at 50, with coffee (or maybe tea) in hand
and this is why i chase my dreams,
my heart keeps beating
