The UST College of Science held its St. Thomas and Distinguished Alumni Lecture and graduation orientation for Batch 2024 graduating students last May 28 at the Medicine Auditorium.

Assoc. Prof. Maria Lourdes Domingo-Maglinao, MD, MHED, DPBNS, FAFN, the first female neurosurgeon of the Philippines and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, delivered the alumni lecture with her discussion entitled “From Graduation to Greatness: Empowering Thomasian Changemakers”.

Dr. Domingo-Maglinao stated, “graduation is not merely the end of one’s road, but rather the beginning of a new chapter in life.” She highlighted the importance of having a vision in mind, building a foundation, navigating challenges, and seizing opportunities to make an impact and sustain momentum. Dr. Domingo-Maglinao also answered questions from the students pertaining to medical school such as how one chooses the right specialty to focus on, in which she advised them to pursue their passion, just as she had done in her own career.

The second half of the event was the graduation orientation, which was headed by the overall chair, Dr. Bryan Simbulan. He briefed the students about the graduation’s program flow, required attire, as well as policies and reminders about the tickets for the hooding parent.

Students are also informed that they should comply with the e-Satisfaction Survey, St. Thomas Lecture, graduation orientation, and baccalaureate mass before they can buy tickets.

The ticket checking for graduates and parents will happen from 6:00 AM to 6:45 AM on the day of their graduation. The assembly area will be at the Practice Court. The start of the processional meanwhile is at 7:00 AM. Dr. Simbulan reminded the students that if they arrive late, they will not be allowed to march on stage or join the procession.

A memo released by the College of Science also stated that the students must pay a Solemn Investiture Fee amounting to PHP 1000. Filipiñana and Barong Tagalog is the outfit required for both the hooding parent and graduate.
