In celebration of Science Week 2024, the College of Science Student Council (CSSC) with the non-academic college-based organizations, organized a day-long fundraiser event for the College of Science community on March 20, 2024.
With the theme “FUNraisers: Workshops for a Cause,” the Red Cross Youth Council - Science Unit (RCYC), College of Science Journal (CSJ), College of Science Dance Troupe (CSDT), College of Science Glee Club conducted workshops revolving around their specialties. The registration fees for each workshop will be dedicated to the College’s Piso Paaral Program—a scholarship program initiated by the CSSC for CoS students, established in 2013, wherein the funds for the scholarship have been raised through the students themselves.
The RCYC organized Lifeline which is designed to equip students with knowledge and skills that are essential for different emergency situations. To fully equip their participants, they did actual demonstration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Heimlich maneuver, and the proper use of the triangular cloth. Afterwards, participants were also given the chance to perform it first-hand, providing them a good rundown of the process.
“Strokes: A Whimsical Creative Writing Workshop” was organized by CSJ and led by Gerard Michael Mirande, the Literary Head of the publication. Mirande emphasized the significance of establishing characters so that readers can visualize and “feel” them. He also shared that a way to be good in writing is to focus on the play of words to show the readers what you want to tell.
Meanwhile, the Glee Club’s “Cantiamo: Sing with Glee” focused on discussing ways to improve one’s musical performance. The participants also delved into different music theories and technicalities. As a demonstration, the Glee Club performed several songs including “Uhaw” by Dilaw and the homegrown UST Hymn as their last performance for the workshop. Pia Sison, the club’s Thomasian Wellness Advocate, emphasized the essence of “Open Science” where the club is open to everyone and music becomes the language that connects us all.
The fast but steady rhythm of “Easy” by Le Sserafim set the College of Science Dance Troupe's feet ablaze. The song was chosen to encapsulate the theme of the workshop, “Smart Steps: A Dance Workshop for Nurturing Young Minds,” focusing mainly on the footwork. It was emphasized during the workshop that an established footwork becomes the foundation to creating a seamless and fluid display of movement, helping a dancer's overall balance.
CSDT President Kyla Anasario led the dance workshop, patiently teaching the participants every step of the song's chorus choreography. With a proper warm-up routine and detailed instructions while considering the dancers' preferred music cues, the participants became confident in their movements, masking their steps to the beat of the song.
Non-academic college-based organizations serve as an antidote to the daily academic stress. Students can pursue their talents while supporting FUNraisers, wherein the fees will be dedicated to the college’s scholarship initiative, the Piso Paaral Program. These workshops for a cause are a gateway in enhancing one’s skills, including their fellowship or relationship with their peers all while helping others achieve their own.
