To enlighten the youth on the arising issues regarding the incoming national and local elections, Sanggunian Kabataan (SK) Chairman Hon. Krystel Kyla Ranchez imparts her knowledge on the topic during a student-led forum titled “PULSO: Aktiboto Science 1.0,” held on October 18 at the UST Frassati Auditorium.

During her presentation titled “HAKBANG,” with the theme “Strengthening the Youth Community Foundations,” Ranchez provided testimonial accounts regarding her experiences as a senior high school student to her current role as SK chairman. Ranchez pointed out the different forms of corruption in the government which endangers the crucial role of SK chairpersons.

“Our role as an SK Chairperson is really at risk kasi we are really being pushed na ‘Eh, iboto mo si ganito dahil makikinabang ka. Eh, iboto mo si ganito kasi ‘yung ganitong leader tinatapakan siya.’ Napagigitnaan kami ng mga situations, but I would still ask myself. ‘Doon ako sa kung ano sa tingin ko mas makabubuti para sa kabataan. ‘Yun ang tinatak ko sa sarili ko.’ I would really not choose someone na would only give me personal gain,” said Ranchez.

Ranchez also criticized several current concerns in the national and local governments. This includes the common perspective of pink and femininity as a sign of weakness, the candidacy of artists who are lacking in credentials, and the culture of utang ng loob. She emphasized that these perspectives and behaviors must not be normalized.

Through her discussion, Ranchez strived to influence the youth to become responsible voters and critical thinkers in the upcoming elections. She also emphasized the value of risk and discomfort in growth to aspiring leaders as they strive to better themselves.
