The University of Santo Tomas Applied Physics Society (UST-APSoc) took stargazing to new heights on December 05, with the Watashi-Wa Star Astronomy Night at the UST Plaza Mayor from 6 to 8 PM–the first time that the organization has conducted stargazing events since the pandemic.
Students and astronomy enthusiasts gathered for an evening of celestial exploration, featuring telescope viewing aimed at deepening the community’s understanding of the cosmos.
The stargazers were able to observe various celestial bodies, including the moon and Saturn. Event organizers used an app to map the night sky without light pollution to pinpoint the location of such objects.
In an interview with the APSoc President, Tobey Calayo highlighted that this event was done to establish various fields of physics beyond the commonly known ones within the College of Science (CoS).
“It helps us [na makabuo ng] research interest and culture interest for our students [para ma-explore nila ‘yong mga] related and linked fields of physics beyond those [na nakasanayan] within the CoS,” he stated.
The activity was done in partnership with Manila Street Astronomers and UP Astronomical Society.
