It was a Saturday morning. Kai booked a cab with her phone, a book in one hand, and her large sling bag in the other. Glancing at her watch, she knew she should have left half an hour ago. But what could a 24-year old possibly do? She was living independently, with a golden retriever under her hood. So who was she to reject calls from her clients online?
Oh, well. She shrugged it off. Now, she gets to have her me-time. Upon entering her favorite coffee and pastry shop, she was appalled to see how her spot — almost always not taken — was. Yet again, she shrugged it off. This woman just wants to have her usual coffee fix with her new purchase from Fully Booked.
Today, it was a memoir. This has been her life after graduation. Living alone in a condo, getting by with a work from home consultant job, and her side job since college — freelance writing. And every now and then when she gets spare time, this is where she goes. Then on her reading break, she took out her crafts — washi tapes, stickers, polaroid pictures, pens — and she started journaling. Planning the right color palette, she started scribbling using her Tombow brush pen. She smiles as she remembers how she transitioned from being a cramming, all-nighter college student to being a casual customer, still with books.
“Home.” She smiled while she reminisced about the usual sceneries in her province — green fields and sunset by the different beaches that wouldn’t take a lot of time to go to because there was no traffic. Life was simple. It was a cottage living at it’s best.
“Caramel Macchiato for Kai”, the barista calls. Then as she went back to her seat, she saw a golden retriever coming towards her that looked exactly like her dog. She was puzzled. And then she saw her human, of whom she met when she was 19. He was still in his executive suit but he wanted to surprise her for their 6th anniversary.
They joined her as she finished her journal entry. She ended up writing not only about her province but also the one she got to call home in the Metro, in the form of two loving hands and a paw.
