Wrapping up Science week, Maski-Pops: The Open Science Variety Show took the College of Science students and faculty on an afternoon to remember with departmental performances, awardings, and special guest appearances at the San Martin De Porres Medicine Auditorium from 1 pm to 6 pm last March 22, 2024.

The event commenced with the UST Science Glee Club’s singing of the Philippine National Anthem. It was succeeded by a production number by the UST Science Week Chair Committee, Dean’s Office, and the College of Science Student Council, igniting excitement among the audience, which persisted throughout each department’s performance.

A competition was held which put the departments of Math & Physics, Chemistry, Psychology, and Biological Sciences head to head as they put on show-stopping performances to come out on top.

Set against a backdrop of pulsating K-pop beats, each department took center stage with its distinctive themes. The Department of Math and Physics transported the audience through the iconic eras of Taylor Swift, while the Department of Chemistry dazzled with a whimsical Powerpuff Girls-inspired performance. The Department of Psychology showcased the Filipino sports culture through a tambay-themed extravaganza. At the same time, The Department of Biological Sciences transformed the venue into a lively karaoke lounge, serenading the crowd with chart-topping K-pop hits.

As a sincere homage to the memory of the late Ma’am Elizabeth Manjares, the organizers of the Variety Show introduced the “Elizabeth Manjares Award,” which was bestowed upon the Department of Chemistry. This esteemed accolade celebrated excellence in performance and served as a fitting tribute to Ma’am Manjares’ enduring legacy. The winning department also had the honor of sponsoring a scholar for an entire academic year, adding another layer of significance to their achievement.

In a special segment, winners and outstanding candidates in “SCIlestial: Search for the Science Ambassador and Ambassadress 2024” were also awarded. The pinnacle of the evening belonged to the Department of Psychology, with their representatives, Jaybee Jordan and Parbhjot Nijjar, crowned as Mr. and Ms. SCIlestial 2024.

Between segments, special guest performances from Shane Dandan, Jade Baruelo, Polaris, and an electrifying display of talent from the UST Archetypes kept the excitement flowing throughout the auditorium.

The Variety Show concluded with the performances of the College of Science’s UST Pax Romana, UST Scarlet, UST RCYC, and UST Community Achievers Association, then the chanting of the college and university’s cheers.
