Dr. Maribel Nonato honored with Professor Emeritus title

Last October 13, 2023, Dr. Maribel G. Nonato, Ph.D. was bestowed with the esteemed title of Professor Emeritus, marking a remarkable milestone in her academic career.
Dr. Nonato has previously served as the Dean of the College of Science and holds the distinction of being the inaugural Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation. Her prominence lies in the field of Natural Products Chemistry, with a particular focus on her substantial contributions to the study of Pandanus species, a dedication that has earned her the moniker “Pandan Queen”.
During the conferral ceremony, Prof. Rey Donne S. Papa, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Science, spokeabout Dr. Nonato’s extensive academic journey and her profound influence on the university. “Her unique contributions to the university, research, and the scientific communityI believe are the key areas why she deserves to be elevated to the rank of Professor Emeritus in the university,” said Dean Papa.
“Even though she earned the status of science royalty, she generously mentored chemistry students in their own quest to pursue careers in the sciences,” he added.
Rev. Fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., Rector of UST, also delivered an address of Dr. Nonato’s remarkable academic journey and her profound impact on the university. He also mentioned that he was the one who offered Dr. Nonato to be the Assistant to the Rector in the University of Santo Tomas General Santos, in which she accepted.
“The reason why I gave her this assignment in General Santos is because I want somebody who can do it with full devotion without any divided attention,” says Rev. Richard Ang. “With her stature, you could hardly believe she is simple, fun loving, and easy to get along with. Her strength of character, determination, and tenacity makes her unstoppable and unbeatable against all odds. That is a true blooded Thomasian,” he added.
During her acceptance speech, Dr. Nonato conveyed her heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support and the numerous opportunities that the university had generously afforded her throughout her extensive academic voyage. She recounted the formidable challenges and trials that she had confronted as an individual who embarked on her academic journey.
The title of Professor Emeritus represents the most esteemed accolade bestowed by the University upon its faculty. It serves as a lifelong testament to the faculty member’s outstanding contributions, unwavering dedication, and steadfast commitment to the principles and values of the University of Santo Tomas.
Dr. Nonato’s acceptance of this prestigious title was met with applause from colleagues, students, and well-wishers who gathered to celebrate this remarkable achievement.
