Student-led organizations from the UST College of Science (CoS) market their booths and clubs during the Grand Promo Day, headlining this year’s Recruitment Fair 101 (R101) at the Quadricentennial Park on Thursday, November 14.

Organized as the highlight of the week-long activities for R101, the college-based student organizations played with Disney-inspired themes and showcased performances that centered on the frisky side of science.

According to CoS Student Council President Kevin Karl Escosar, this year’s R101 theme, “The Magic of Science,” reflects how the college serves as a home, providing “magical” opportunities to propel both academic and sociopolitical engagements of their students.

“I believe that being part of student organizations, especially here in the college, is an important step toward student formation,” Escosar said. “Importante pa rin na students get to have that platform to take up space through the different socio-civic organizations or academic societies,” he added.

CoS Mathematical Society President Aaron Dave Martin also shared how joining student organizations is what he considers his “escape” away from academic stressors.

“We should join student organizations because it is part of the Thomasian experience, para mayroon pa rin tayong life outside academics,” he said.

The event also featured production numbers from student leaders, starting with the CoS Drumline’s Science cheer, attracting Thomasian scientists to the celebration.

Among the spotlights of the show is the three-way routine of the UST-Psychology Society and its sub-organizations: the Psychology Talent Pool and the Psychology Dance Troupe, who recently bagged the championship title at the newest edition of DanScene XXXV Rebirth Competition last November 8.

To wrap up the event, CoS Microbiology Society President and R101 Program Head Ramon Ellis Francisco stressed the importance of collaboration and open communication in bringing projects together within organizations.

“As leaders, you have many opportunities to bring back the fire of service, collaboration, and purpose, not for personal recognition but for the greater good. This is what defines a true Thomasian leader,” Francisco concluded.

R101 is an annual gathering of CoS student leaders to promote and recruit interested applicants for various student organizations offered by the college. It started on November 12 and will continue until Wednesday, November 20.
