Agham Volleyball Teams Demonstrate Grit in TGG Prelims

The College of Science (CoS) Volleyball Team continues its Thomasian Goodwill Games (TGG) Volleyball Tournament elimination bid as they take on different colleges at the P. Noval Court from November 12 to November 21.
As the preliminary stage ended, the men’s team tallied a 3–1 record, while their counterpart in women’s division recorded 2–2.
CoS Men’s sweep Architecture in Game 2
After defeating the Faculty of Arts and Letters (AB) in the TGG opener in straight sets, the CoS Men’s Volleyball team once again swept Game 2 in their match against the College of Architecture on Tuesday, November 12.
The Agham Team commanded the first frame, 13–8, with three back-to-back service aces from their team captain, Andrei Mercene, contributing to a slim advantage for the squad. The team maintained their momentum, and they captured the first set with a score of 25–14.
Both squads managed to bank on offense and defense in the second set as the teams tied 19–19 near the end of the period.
Despite efforts from both teams, a crucial attack by Agham’s Ferdinand Olmedo ended the match at 25–23, handing Science its second win.
Science Women’s Volleyball Team opens TGG Volleyball stint in 3-set thriller
In a thrilling three-setter, the CoS Women’s Volleyball Team triumphed
over the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery (FMS) in their TGG opening match on Wednesday, November 13, held at the P. Noval Court.
Science took the first round, 25–18, with a 7-point cushion against Medicine.
CoS struggled to keep its momentum in the second set, which ended 21–25, in favor of the FMS Volleyball Team.
After countless efforts, the Agham Women’s Volleyball Team managed to bounce back in the third set, sealing their first TGG victory with a 25–22 win.
Agham Women’s succumbed to AMV in extended set
After conquering their three-set opener, the CoS Women’s Volleyball Team faltered in their second game against the College of Accountancy (AMV) on Friday at the P. Noval Court.
AMV had a 3-point cushion at the start of the match, 6–9, but was eventually tied up, 10–10, after crucial errors and attacks from both teams.
Despite their efforts, Science struggled to overcome Accountancy’s defensive plays concluding the first set with a 19–25 loss.
The second set started with back-to-back errors, allowing AMV to take the lead but Science quickly gained its momentum, with scores at 6–6.
As CoS delivered its offense and defense, they managed to overtake AMV, 11–9, before the first timeout of the set.
However, a late-game comeback tied the scores at 23–23.
The extended set ended with AMV securing a 25–27 win, handing CoS Women’s their first loss in the tournament.
Science Volleyball Team ended Week 2 with a sweep
The CoS Men’s Volleyball Team capped off week 2 with another win against the Graduate School-Faculty of Civil Law on Saturday, November 16.
The Graduate School-Faculty of Civil Law took the first set, with CoS experiencing only a 2-point deficit of 23–25.
Agham Men’s Volleyball team recovered in the second and third set, sweeping the match with 25–22 and 25–20 wins, respectively.
CoS Men’s falls prey to CCBA in a clash of the unbeatens
CoS tainted their spotless tournament run against the undefeated College of Commerce and Business Administration (CCBA) with a reverse sweep loss, 25–15, 12–25, 24–26, in the TGG Men’s Volleyball Category, held on Tuesday, November 19, at the P. Noval Court.
It was Agham’s game in the first set with their consistent offense, 25–15.
However, a change of gear happened in the second set in favor of Commerce with their sharp and aggressive attacks shifting the momentum allowing them to secure the set, 12–25.
The third set was a neck-to-neck battlecry between the two teams until Commerce pulled away to the match point, 21–24. Science, trying to make a Cinderella story comeback, froze the tempo of the Commerce to deuce the score, 24–24. Science’s effort eventually came to a halt after a failed middle attack handing the triumph to Commerce, 24–26.
CoS Women’s dismantled the College of Architecture
Science displayed their offensive prowess to rack up their second win against the College of Architecture, 25–19, 25–18, in the TGG women’s division at the P. Noval Court on Wednesday, November 20.
Despite a rough 0–4 run at the beginning of the first set, Agham recovered with 10 straight points from the spikes of their captain, Stefi Uang, eventually taking a 10–4 lead. The architects were trying to close the gap but fell short with Science securing the first set, 25–19.
Agham’s tempo continued in the second set as Uang tallied 10 points to bag their second win, 25–18.
CoS-WVT fell short of qualifying in the quarterfinal playoffs
The Science Women’s Volleyball Team barely misses the playoffs after a heartbreaking loss against the Faculty of Engineering (FoE) on Thursday, November 21.
With powerful serves from Alyssa Dela Rosa and attacks by Stefanie Uang in the opening minutes, the CoS-WVT delivered a 6-point advantage. Agham tallied 16–4 before the first time out, giving them a strong lead against the team from Ruaño.
However, FoE managed to keep up as CoS struggled with multiple errors and the ENGG-WVT strategically played its offense.
The game was tied at 23–23.
Crucial service aces from the Engineering earned them the second set.
The second set was tightly contested with both teams keeping the early minutes of the second set to an 8–8 record.
Near the end of the match, the teams kept a close gap through decisive attacks and errors.
After forcing an extended set, the FoE booked their quarterfinals with 26–24.
As the pool stage ended, the CoS men’s volleyball team secured the Top 2 in Pool A, behind the undefeated CCBA, to get their ticket to the playoffs of the tournament. As for the women’s division, they fell short after the defeat against the FoE to place them third in the pool standing.
